Nasal congestion is one of the most common and annoying allergy symptoms. Decongestant nasal sprays provide quick and effective relief by reducing mucus production.

How do they work;

Their action is based on two main methods:

Tightening of blood vessels:

  • They contain vasoconstrictors, such as xylometazoline or oxymetazoline. These components act on the α-adrenergic receptors of the nasal blood vessels, causing them to contract.
  • Tightening reduces blood flow, thereby reducing swelling and hyperemia in the nasal tissues.
  • Reducing swelling opens up the nasal airways and makes breathing easier.

Decreased mucus production:

  • Some decongestant sprays also contain anticholinergics, such as ipratropium. Anticholinergics act on receptors in the nasal glands, reducing mucus production.
