S-Adenosyl-Methionine

SAMe (S-adenosyl-L-methionine) is a derivative of the amino acid methionine and acts as a methyl donor. It is concentrated in the liver and brain for the synthesis of hormones, nucleic acids, proteins, phospholipids and neurotransmitters (such as dopamine and serotonin). Its levels tend to decrease over time and it cannot be obtained from food. SAMe deficiency has been associated with the development of depression and osteoarthritis.

As a supplement, SAMe can be used in the following cases:

• In osteoarthritis: research has shown that taking SAMe can have the same effects as pain relievers in osteoarthritis pain. A longer period of time is required for a noticeable reduction in pain but it can be an important factor in reducing the use of pharmaceutical analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs.
• Dealing with depression: increases serotonin levels in the blood and improves symptoms of depression. In fact, it appears to have similar effectiveness to antidepressant drugs. 
• Reduction of symptoms of cholestasis: cholestasis can occur due to cysts or stones in the bile, due to liver diseases (hepatitis, cirrhosis) or during pregnancy. SAMe appears to reduce accompanying symptoms such as itching, fatigue, and elevated liver enzyme levels.

• Vitamins B1, B6 and B12 they contribute to the normal functioning of metabolic processes aimed at energy production.
• The folic acid contributes to the normal metabolism of homocysteine.
• Lack of folic acid and vitamin B12 can lead to reduced production of SAMe in the body.
